Los piratas del Caribe
Este módulo presenta el mundo de la piratería en el Mar Caribe y su impacto en la historia de Cartagena de Indias. A través de figuras de piratas europeos, se ilustra cómo franceses, ingleses y holandeses, muchos de ellos apoyados por sus coronas, buscaron apropiarse de los tesoros del Nuevo Mundo.
La piratería surgió como respuesta al dominio español sobre América, respaldado por decisiones papales que excluyeron a otras potencias. Aunque a menudo ha sido romantizada, en realidad representó una amenaza constante para ciudades estratégicas como Cartagena, clave en el comercio de riquezas provenientes del continente.
El módulo también destaca los primeros ataques a la ciudad, como el del pirata francés Robert Baal, seguido por otros corsarios europeos como John Hawkins, quien intentó sin éxito tomar la ciudad.
Finalmente, se explica la respuesta del Imperio español, que implementó un sistema de flotas protegidas por galeones de guerra para resguardar los tesoros. Ante esto, los piratas optaron por atacar directamente las ciudades portuarias antes de la salida de las riquezas hacia Europa.
Pirates of the Caribbean
This module explores the world of piracy in the Caribbean Sea and its impact on the history of Cartagena de Indias. Through the stories of European pirates, it illustrates how the French, English, and Dutch, many of whom were backed by their respective monarchies, sought to lay claim to the treasures of the New World.
Piracy emerged as a response to Spanish dominance over the Americas, backed by papal decrees that excluded other powers. Although it has often been romanticized, it actually posed a constant threat to strategic cities like Cartagena, which was key to the trade of riches from the continent.
The module also highlights the first attacks on the city, such as that by the French pirate Robert Baal, followed by other European privateers like John Hawkins, who unsuccessfully attempted to capture the city.
Finally, it explains the Spanish Empire’s response, which implemented a system of fleets protected by warships to safeguard the treasures. In response, the pirates chose to attack the port cities directly before the riches were shipped to Europe.
