The Sieges of Cartagena on the Night of San Juan
This exhibit tells the story of the naval campaigns carried out by the first fleet of Gran Colombia, which departed from Angostura on the Orinoco River with the mission of liberating the coast of New Granada from Spanish control. Commanded by Admiral Pedro Luis Brión, with José Prudencio Padilla serving as second-in-command, the fleet played a decisive role in the independence campaign along the Caribbean coast.
Throughout the campaign, several important victories were achieved. These included the liberation of Riohacha, the victory at San Juan de la Ciénaga, which led to the surrender of royalist forces in Santa Marta, and the capture of the fortified customs post at Sabanilla. During this operation, patriot forces approached under Spanish flags, successfully taking the position without firing a single shot.
The exhibit concludes with the siege of Cartagena de Indias in 1821 and the operation known as the Night of San Juan. Carried out between June 23 and 24, this naval maneuver isolated Spanish vessels within the bay and significantly weakened their ability to resist. The operation contributed to the surrender of Cartagena a few days later and highlights not only the military achievement but also the hardships endured by the civilian population trapped inside the city walls, many of whom had already survived the siege of 1815.
