Las rutas marítimas del gran caribe
Este módulo interactivo muestra el momento de mayor esplendor del comercio en el Gran Caribe, cuando las conexiones entre las islas de las Antillas y los puertos del continente impulsaron el desarrollo económico y cultural de la región.
Desde Cartagena de Indias, embarcaciones rápidas de vela conocidas como goletas recorrían estas rutas marítimas, transportando mercancías, personas e ideas. Este intercambio constante dio origen a una identidad cultural diversa, influenciada por Europa pero profundamente marcada por la herencia afrocaribeña. El módulo permite ubicar los principales puertos del Caribe a partir de su posición geográfica. Un gran aro señala su orientación respecto a los puntos cardinales, mientras que los paneles informativos describen las rutas necesarias para llegar a cada destino, junto con datos históricos y visuales.
En el centro, un mástil interactivo permite a los visitantes girar las velas hacia diferentes direcciones, simulando la navegación. Un compás magnético indica el rumbo elegido, mientras que la estructura del barco enseña conceptos básicos de navegación como babor (izquierda), estribor (derecha), proa (frente) y popa (parte trasera). En la base, una rosa de los vientos completa la experiencia, ayudando a comprender cómo los navegantes se orientaban en el mar. Este módulo invita a explorar el Caribe como un espacio de conexión, intercambio y construcción cultural.
The maritime routes of the Greater Caribbean
This interactive module showcases the golden age of trade in the Greater Caribbean, when connections between the islands of the Antilles and ports on the mainland drove the region’s economic and cultural development.
From Cartagena de Indias, fast sailing vessels known as schooners traveled these maritime routes, transporting goods, people, and ideas. This constant exchange gave rise to a diverse cultural identity, influenced by Europe but deeply marked by Afro-Caribbean heritage. The module allows visitors to locate the main ports of the Caribbean based on their geographic position. A large ring indicates their orientation relative to the cardinal points, while informational panels describe the routes needed to reach each destination, along with historical and visual data.
In the center, an interactive mast allows visitors to turn the sails in different directions, simulating navigation. A magnetic compass indicates the chosen course, while the ship’s structure teaches basic navigation concepts such as port (left), starboard (right), bow (front), and stern (rear). At the base, a compass rose completes the experience, helping visitors understand how sailors navigated at sea. This module invites visitors to explore the Caribbean as a space for connection, exchange, and cultural construction.
