Las Llaves de las Indias
Este módulo presenta el sistema defensivo creado por el Imperio español para proteger Cartagena de Indias, uno de los puertos más importantes de América durante la época colonial. Gracias a su ubicación estratégica en el Mar Caribe, la ciudad se convirtió en objetivo constante de piratas y potencias enemigas.
Para defender la bahía y controlar el acceso marítimo, los españoles construyeron fuertes, castillos, baterías y puestos fortificados en zonas estratégicas como Bocachica y Bocagrande. Estas estructuras militares funcionaban como “Las Llaves de las Indias”, ya que protegían las rutas comerciales y las riquezas transportadas entre América y España.
El módulo también muestra mapas, planos y representaciones de las principales fortificaciones de Cartagena, destacando su importancia dentro de la historia naval y militar del Caribe. Gracias a este sistema defensivo, Cartagena logró consolidarse como uno de los puertos fortificados más importantes del Imperio español.
Actualmente, estas fortificaciones son reconocidas como parte del patrimonio histórico y cultural de Cartagena de Indias.
The Keys of the Indies
This module presents the defensive system created by the Spanish Empire to protect Cartagena de Indias, one of the most important ports in the Americas during the colonial period. Due to its strategic location in the Caribbean Sea, the city became a constant target for pirates and enemy powers.
To defend the bay and control maritime access, the Spanish built forts, castles, batteries, and fortified posts in strategic areas such as Bocachica and Bocagrande. These military structures became known as “The Keys of the Indies” because they protected trade routes and the wealth transported between America and Spain.
The module also features maps, plans, and representations of Cartagena’s main fortifications, highlighting their importance in the naval and military history of the Caribbean. Thanks to this defensive system, Cartagena became one of the most fortified ports of the Spanish Empire.
Today, these fortifications are recognized as part of the historical and cultural heritage of Cartagena de Indias.
