This module presents the history of Gran Colombia, the grand political project led by Simón Bolívar that united the territories of present-day Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, and Panama between 1819 and 1830. The nation was born following the victories of the independence movement and was proclaimed at the Congress of Angostura in 1819, with the aim of creating a great power capable of guaranteeing freedom and preventing the return of Spanish rule. Cartagena de Indias established itself as one of its main military ports, playing a key role in the naval defense of the new state.

Throughout the module, different moments in the history of this republic are depicted through a sequence of events that highlight both its achievements and its internal conflicts. During its early years, Gran Colombia promoted the independence of other territories and strengthened its presence in the Americas, becoming one of the first internationally recognized republics.

However, political tensions, regional interests, and differences among its leaders weakened the country’s unity. In 1830, following Bolívar’s resignation and death, the project dissolved, giving rise to new independent nations.
The module also highlights the role of military and naval leaders, as well as original artifacts from the period, which help visitors understand the political, military, and social context of this ambitious nation. Gran Colombia was a dream of continental integration that, though short-lived, marked the origins of several Latin American countries and left a legacy that remains part of their identity to this day.
