Goleta Gaira
Las goletas surgieron a principios del siglo XVIII y rápidamente se convirtieron en embarcaciones importantes para la navegación en el Caribe. Gracias a su diseño ágil y veloz, eran ideales para el comercio marítimo, el transporte de mercancías y el cabotaje entre puertos cercanos.
Además, estas embaraciones destacaban por su facilidad de maniobra y su capacidad para navegar en diferentes rutas del Caribe. Por esta razón, las goletas tuvieron un papel importante en el desarrollo comercial y marítimo de la región.
Actualmente, el nombre Gaira representa una moderna y majestuosa goleta de 80 pies que navega en Cartagena, Colombia. Esta embarcación ofrece recorridos turísticos y experiencias exclusivas, manteniendo viva la tradición naval y marítima de la ciudad.

This module presents the attack on Cartagena de Indias in 1697, one of the greatest tragedies in the city’s history. After decades of apparent security, the defenses had fallen into disrepair, which facilitated the attack led by the French sailor Jean-Bernard Desjeans under the orders of King Louis XIV.
The module shows how the city was captured and sacked with the support of Caribbean pirates, leaving severe economic and social consequences. This event marked the decline of its prosperity, leading to the departure of merchants and elites, and profoundly transforming urban life in Cartagena.
Through models, original weapons, and historical artifacts, the exhibition recreates the unfolding of the battle and highlights the impact of this episode on the city’s colonial history.
