Los galeones españoles
Este módulo presenta la importancia de los galeones españoles, considerados las embarcaciones de guerra más poderosas de su época, y pieza clave en el sistema comercial del Imperio en Cartagena de Indias. Estos buques no solo transportaban pasajeros, funcionarios y clérigos, sino también enormes riquezas provenientes de América.
A bordo se trasladaban tributos como el “Quinto Real”, además de oro, joyas y productos de gran valor destinados a España, convirtiendo a los galeones en verdaderas fortalezas flotantes. Debido a su poder militar, rara vez eran enfrentados por otras potencias, siendo las tormentas su principal amenaza, lo que explica la presencia de numerosos naufragios en el Mar Caribe.
El módulo también exhibe restos arqueológicos recuperados de la bahía, como cerámicas, botijas y tinajas utilizadas para transportar alimentos, agua y licores. Estas piezas permiten comprender la vida a bordo y el funcionamiento logístico de las flotas coloniales, destacando la importancia de la conservación del patrimonio subacuático.
The Spanish Galleons
This module highlights the significance of Spanish galleons, considered the most powerful warships of their time and a key component of the Empire’s commercial system in Cartagena de Indias. These ships not only carried passengers, officials, and clergy, but also enormous riches from the Americas.
On board were transported tributes such as the “Quinto Real,” as well as gold, jewels, and high value goods destined for Spain, turning the galleons into true floating fortresses. Due to their military might, they were rarely challenged by other powers, with storms being their main threat which explains the presence of numerous shipwrecks in the Caribbean Sea.
The exhibit also displays archaeological remains recovered from the bay, such as ceramics, jugs, and jars used to transport food, water, and liquor. These artifacts provide insight into life aboard and the logistical operations of the colonial fleets, highlighting the importance of preserving underwater heritage.
