This module recounts the assault on Cartagena de Indias by the English privateer Francis Drake, known as “The Dragon of the Seas,” a pivotal event that prompted the Spanish Crown to strengthen its defenses in the Caribbean.
The exhibition includes a depiction of Drake and a model that reconstructs the attack step by step, illustrating the strategies used to capture the city. It also explores the causes of the conflict, marked by rivalries among European powers and the political tensions of the era.
The module further highlights Drake’s career, as he achieved worldwide fame for his expeditions and for becoming one of the first sailors to circumnavigate the globe. His story is shrouded in legends, such as that of the treasure hidden after the sacking of Cartagena and his mysterious death on American soil.
