Dirección marítima de Colombia – DIMAR
La Dirección Marítima de Colombia (DIMAR) es una entidad adscrita a la Armada Nacional de Colombia, encargada de garantizar la seguridad integral marítima y el control de los espacios acuáticos del país.
En este módulo del museo, DIMAR está representada a través de la estructura de un faro, al cual se puede ascender hasta su linterna, permitiendo comprender la importancia de la señalización marítima para la navegación segura. Además, el espacio incluye una vitrina con diversos elementos de señalización utilizados en el mar, así como una sección dedicada al Centro de Investigaciones Oceanográficas e Hidrográficas (CIOH), donde se destacan sus investigaciones y el trabajo de sus buques oceanográficos.
El recorrido se complementa con una maqueta tridimensional que muestra las profundidades de los mares de Colombia, permitiendo visualizar la complejidad y riqueza del territorio marítimo nacional.
Colombian Maritime Authority – DIMAR
The Colombian Maritime Directorate (DIMAR) is an agency under the Colombian Navy responsible for ensuring comprehensive maritime security and controlling the country’s waters.
In this section of the museum, DIMAR is represented by a lighthouse structure that visitors can climb to the top of, helping them understand the importance of maritime navigation aids for safe navigation. In addition, the space includes a display case with various signaling elements used at sea, as well as a section dedicated to the Center for Oceanographic and Hydrographic Research (CIOH), highlighting its research and the work of its oceanographic vessels.
The tour is complemented by a three-dimensional model showing the depths of Colombia’s seas, allowing visitors to visualize the complexity and richness of the national maritime territory.

CIOH
El Centro de Investigaciones Oceanográficas e Hidrográficas del Caribe (CIOH) fue creado en 1975 con el objetivo de estudiar y proteger el territorio marítimo colombiano. Además, esta institución contribuye a la seguridad en el mar, la investigación científica y el desarrollo de actividades marítimas y portuarias.
El CIOH realiza estudios sobre oceanografía, hidrografía, biología marina y geología costera. Asimismo, monitorea las condiciones del mar y apoya el sistema nacional de alerta de tsunami para proteger a las poblaciones costeras.
El módulo también presenta el sonar de barrido lateral, una tecnología utilizada para obtener imágenes del fondo marino. Gracias a este sistema, los investigadores pueden identificar objetos, sedimentos y estructuras submarinas con mayor precisión.
Por esta razón, el sonar se ha convertido en una herramienta importante para la investigación oceanográfica, la arqueología subacuática y la navegación marítima.
CIOH
The Caribbean Oceanographic and Hydrographic Research Center (CIOH) was created in 1975 to study and protect Colombia’s maritime territory. In addition, the institution supports maritime safety, scientific research, and the development of port and naval activities.
CIOH conducts studies in oceanography, hydrography, marine biology, and coastal geology. Likewise, it monitors sea conditions and supports the national tsunami warning system to help protect coastal communities.
The module also presents side scan sonar, a technology used to obtain images of the seabed. Thanks to this system, researchers can identify underwater objects, sediments, and structures with greater accuracy.
For this reason, sonar has become an important tool for oceanographic research, underwater archaeology, and maritime navigation.
