Castillo de San Luis
El Castillo de San Luis fue una de las fortificaciones más importantes para la defensa de Cartagena de Indias. Esta estructura protegía la entrada a la bahía a través del Canal de Bocachica, ubicado al sur de la isla de Tierrabomba.
El ingeniero Juan de Somovilla y Tejada diseñó el castillo en 1640. Su construcción tomó cerca de 40 años debido a la magnitud de la obra y a su importancia estratégica para la defensa marítima del Imperio español.
Además, el Castillo de San Luis participó en importantes enfrentamientos históricos. En 1697 fue tomado por los franceses. Más tarde, en 1741, la armada británica lo destruyó después de 17 días continuos de batalla. Actualmente, este módulo permite conocer la historia militar de Bocachica y la importancia de las fortificaciones que protegieron a Cartagena durante la época colonial.
San Luis Castle
The San Luis Castle was one of the most important fortifications used to defend Cartagena de Indias. This structure protected the entrance to the bay through the Bocachica Channel, located south of Tierrabomba Island.
Engineer Juan de Somovilla y Tejada designed the castle in 1640. Its construction lasted nearly 40 years because of the scale of the project and its strategic importance for the maritime defense of the Spanish Empire.
In addition, San Luis Castle took part in major historical battles. In 1697, French forces captured the fortress. Later, in 1741, the British army destroyed it after 17 continuous days of fighting.
Today, this module allows visitors to learn about the military history of Bocachica and the importance of the fortifications that protected Cartagena during colonial times.
