Cartagena en el siglo de las luces
Este módulo presenta a Cartagena de Indias durante el Siglo de las Luces, una época marcada por el avance del pensamiento científico bajo la dinastía de los Borbones tras la victoria de Felipe V en la Guerra de Sucesión.
En 1735, la ciudad se convirtió en punto clave para una misión científica internacional que buscaba medir la forma y tamaño de la Tierra. En este contexto, los científicos españoles Jorge Juan y Antonio de Ulloa realizaron importantes estudios en Cartagena, documentando su geografía, naturaleza y vida social. Sus investigaciones fueron publicadas en la obra Viaje a la América Meridional, contribuyendo al conocimiento científico de la región.
El módulo también destaca el impulso académico generado por figuras como Juan de Herrera y Sotomayor, quien fortaleció las fortificaciones y promovió el desarrollo de las matemáticas y la cosmografía en la ciudad.
La exhibición incluye instrumentos de navegación, planos de la bahía con coordenadas basadas en el meridiano de París y representaciones científicas propias de la Ilustración, evidenciando el papel de Cartagena como centro de conocimiento en el siglo XVIII.
Cartagena in the Age of Enlightenment
This module presents Cartagena de Indias during the Age of Enlightenment, a period marked by the advancement of scientific thought under the Bourbon dynasty following Philip V’s victory in the War of the Spanish Succession.
In 1735, the city became a key hub for an international scientific mission seeking to measure the shape and size of the Earth. In this context, Spanish scientists Jorge Juan and Antonio de Ulloa conducted important studies in Cartagena, documenting its geography, nature, and social life. Their research was published in the work “Viaje a la América Meridional” (Journey to South America), contributing to scientific knowledge of the region.
The module also highlights the academic momentum generated by figures such as Juan de Herrera y Sotomayor, who strengthened the fortifications and promoted the development of mathematics and cosmography in the city.
The exhibition includes navigational instruments, maps of the bay with coordinates based on the Paris meridian, and scientific illustrations characteristic of the Enlightenment, highlighting Cartagena’s role as a center of knowledge in the 18th century.
