The engineer who conquered the sea
This module is dedicated to Antonio de Arévalo, one of the most important figures in the history of Cartagena de Indias during the late colonial period. For more than 50 years, he oversaw projects that transformed the city into one of the most advanced defensive systems in the Americas.
Among his major contributions are the expansion of the Castillo de San Felipe de Barajas, the construction of the Fuerte de San Fernando de Bocachica, and the modernization of the Fuerte de San José. He also reinforced the city walls with structures such as the Espigón de la Tenaza and built the Cuartel de Las Bóvedas. His most notable achievement was the Bocagrande Breakwater, an underwater wall approximately 1,800 meters long that blocked access to this part of the bay. Unlike previous attempts, Arévalo managed to harness the power of the sea to build it, allowing this structure to endure to this day.
Thanks to his ingenuity and vision, Cartagena was able to protect itself from both enemy attacks and the force of the sea, establishing itself as one of the best-fortified cities on the continent.
